We were not talking the same language and misunderstandings were the rule. I learnt the hard way what Asperger Syndrome was. No other option seems available to us. What is even more horrifying and disabling for us is the requirement on our part to patiently endure being corrected, directed, criticized and often rudely spoken to regularly by our AS partners, sometimes constantly, as they work on forming us into more complete and tolerable partners for themselves, while we weather the torpedo blasts of rage and reaction they direct towards us if we suggest an imperfection in them. It was exposed to me almost every day and I had trained myself not to pay attention because it was too stressful for me. But this time he was unusually verbally cruel. He did not respond to my requests to stop, but increased the cruel verbal abuses. I was exhausted and despaired… Smash.

Although the answer to this question may seem simple, it recurs with alarming regularity on aspie forums everywhere. Often, it is confused with the aspie’s ability to find a partner or the famous aspie empathy problems – these are different things altogether which I’ll hopefully discuss in follow-up posts.
Helping each other enjoy life and relationships on the spectrum. Saturday, May 26, The Hidden Autistics – Asperger’s in Adults Recently I encountered a problem while collaborating with a group therapist with whom I share a patient. My patient has progressed quickly in therapy, as do many adults on the spectrum. However he did not start off as stereotypically autistic. In fact, initially he presented as many of my patients do: Typical posture, gait and gesturing.
It took a few sessions to realize this fine gentleman suffered mightly with the symtoms of Asperger Syndrome, which he kept well managed and thoroughly hidden. Contrary to the stereotyoes of adults on the spectrum, my patient displayed no “meltdown” behavior, was keenly TOO keenly aware of people’s reactions to him and exhibited no bizarre special interests or encyclopedic knowledge of vaccuum models.
In fact, “Joe”, as we’ll call him, socialized quite well. He seemed quietly confident and wry, intelligent and perceptive. People responded well to him, really liked him, though probably none of them would describe him as a close friend. No one realized – in fact he often went without realizing – that his baseline anxiety approached panic on a regular basis.
As soon as he was out of bed, existential angst was his constant companion.

Helping my son is so much easier these days. I only wish I had found all of this out years ago. Although my story has a positive ending, I met many people during my research whose stories were not ending well. They were struggling to make it through each day, constantly sick with worry that something horrible would happen to their loved one before the Aspergers was brought under control. They were struggling to answer questions like: With the information I learned, I would be able to help other families overcome, and even prevent, the tremendous obstacles my son has had to conquer.
When they heard that I had done all of this research and that I was helping my son, they started asking for my help, too. If I could have had everything in some type of report or book, then things would have been so much easier for me, my wife … even my son. Once I got started, I realized that the same information may not be right for everyone.

Early in life, they gaze at people, turn toward voices, endearingly grasp a finger, and even smile. In contrast, most children with autism seem to have tremendous difficulty learning to engage in the give-and-take of everyday human interaction.
Even in the first few months of life, many do not interact and they avoid eye contact. They seem to prefer being alone.

Countless studies show individuals would rather have pleasant and personable co-workers than a co-worker who is always right. But sometimes my plans fail. Both high and low functioning individuals have very poor short-term working memory, but they often have a better long-term memory than most normal individuals. I cannot handle multiple tasks at the same time. The boss must recognize your social limitations. Sell your work, not your personality.

Can Asperger’s Syndrome Be Cured?
By Adrienne Warber Mild Aspergers syndrome is sometimes difficult to diagnose. Some mild cases are not diagnosed until later in childhood or even adulthood. If you are concerned that you or a loved one may have Aspergers, it is important to seek diagnosis. Learn how to recognize even the mildest symptoms of Aspergers syndrome. Diagnosing Mild Aspergers Syndrome Aspergers syndrome is a pervasive developmental disorder that is categorized as part of the autism spectrum of disorders.
The neurological condition involves impairments in areas such as social skills, communication and sensory processing. Unlike classical autism which is usually detected by age three, Aspergers is often missed in early childhood. The reason for the missed diagnosis is the fact that many children with Aspergers meet most early childhood developmental milestones, although some are late bloomers, and often have a large vocabulary.
In some cases of mild Aspergers, the first noticeable signs of the disorder may be apparent when the child enters school and has significant difficultly with social interaction, communication or understanding verbal instruction.
